Dr Jane Goudge

Dr Jane Goudge, the Director of the Centre for Health Policy,  School of Public Health, University of the Witwatersrand, has been conducting research in the field of health systems and policy research for 15 years.  She has a PhD in development economics from the School of Oriental and African Studies, London University.

She has worked particularly on access to health care and the impoverishment experienced by poor households. She has done work on the inequities in the financing and benefit incidence of health care, and strategies to improve universal coverage.

Other major themes in her work include the role of community health workers in bridging the gap between households and the health system, retention in care of adults with chronic illnesses, and current implementation of NHI. She is currently co-leading an implementation study on supporting chronic care in rural South Africa (Agincourt), and establishing a district level research practice collaboration in Gauteng.
