Health Facility Committees: Are they working?
Health Facility Governing Committees were first introduced in Tanzania in 1999 in order to develop the plans and budget of health facilities, mobilise the community to contribute to the Community Health (Insurance) Fund, and to report health provider employment and training needs to the district council. Researchers examined how these Committees are perceived by various groups within the community; which activities the Committees are engaged in; the impact they have had to date and how the Committees can be more effective in the future.
The brief highlights key messages for effective Committee action, including engaging in public health initiatives within the community and the need for strong leadership to build community trust. It also sets out recommendations for Health Facility Governing Committees to increase their effectiveness.
