Shakira Choonara was presented with this prestigious award at the Woman of Stature Awards Ceremony in Johannesburg, beating a shortlist of distinguished academics and other medical professionals.
Launched in April 2013, The Woman of Stature Awards aim to inspire and empower women from a variety of backgrounds and endeavours while also raising awareness and funds for charity.

Shakira Choonara is currently pursuing her PhD in public health and is passionate about improving health systems in low and middle income county settings. Her research, on the micro-practices of governance in health systems is being undertaken as part of the RESYST research consortium and Shakira has recently published a journal publication about leadership development in health systems.
