Is gender really a non-issue for health leadership progression in Kenya?
Kui Muraya from the Kemri Wellcome Trust Research programme, is a researcher involved in the RESYST gender and leadership study which aims to explore and understand the gendered career and leadership experiences of senior healthcare managers in Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa.
In this 5 minute video, Kui gives an introduction to the study, shares the emerging research findings and suggests their implications. The research reveals that in all three countries, professional categories and hierarchies play a dominant role in career progression, with a tendency for medical doctors to be preferentially selected for leadership roles. In addition, each country had context specific impacts such as gender intersecting with social norms, professional networks and race.
