In 2013, Health Policy Research Group in Nigeria carried out a research project that focused on the implementation of the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF) in Nigeria, and how evidence could be used to strengthen accountability in its implementation.

The Basic Health Care provision fund was set up as part of the National Health Act, as a way of increasing funding to primary health services and providing a basic package of health services to all citizens. In this sense, it is a central part of the country’s plans to achieve Universal Health Coverage.
The research aimed to feed into national and state level policy processes in Nigeria by suggesting appropriate accountability mechanisms at different levels of the health system.
Impact case study: Shaping Nigeria's Roadmap to Universal Health Coverage
Current work is underway to track the extent to which the research has been used and the facilitators or barriers to impact.
